Great Compassion a.k.a Mahakaruna

It’s been a while; I've wanted to dig the true nature of compassion. But whatever I've experienced has come not from intellectual investigation but from my actual experiences of pain and sufferings. Suffering is a mere drop of emptiness so insignificant that it should dissolve like mist at dawn. Compassion is the awareness of a deep bond between yourself and all creatures. In Hindi, great compassion is called Mahakaruna.

Staying up all night worrying about your loved one, you are so attached to the phenomenal world that you may not be able to see the true face of reality. Every thought is for the well being of your loved one. Whereas, the doctor knows that the patient will recover, and so she may smile even while the patient is still sick. This smile is not diplomatic or cynical; it is a selfless smile and more importantly is comprises of faith and devotion.

When we begin to see that bonfire and house fire are neither ugly nor beautiful, when we can see them without discrimination or duality, then we begin to grasp Great Compassion. In the eyes of Great Compassion, there is no wrong-doings or right doings, good or bad. The energy it has is radiant and wondrous. There is no separation between subject and object, no separate self. It goes beyond empathy or sympathy. It does not happen until sadness merges with joy, the joy of Being beyond form, the joy of eternal life.

If a devilish person disembowels you, you can smile and look at him with love. When you let compassion pour from your eyes, voice, gesture and don't let a ripple of blame or anger rise up in your heart. Magic is going to happen. Remembering this, you will continue on your path. You will have a refuge that no one can take from you. No one will be able to disturb your faith, because that faith does not rely on anything in the phenomenal world. Faith and love are one and can only emerge when you penetrate deeply the empty nature of the phenomenal world, when you can see that you are in everything and everything is in you.
